Yellowstone in Winter

As winter’s snow settles, the land and everything within it adjusts to the season.

Survival is deliberate—the coyote moves through the snow with measured steps, conserving energy where every decision matters.

Motion costs energy—a goldeneye moves quickly across the icy water, never lingering longer than it has to.

Taking a moment. Two river otters rest at the edge of moving water, pressed close as snow settles around them. In winter, survival isn’t always about motion—sometimes it’s about staying together.

Burned and frozen, the land doesn’t stop. Water keeps its course—even here.

Always watching, unmoved by snowfall.

Endurance, together. Trumpeter swans stand quietly along the ice, resting where water still flows—strength found in stillness and in proximity.

Where the earth breathes. Even in deep winter, the ground releases warmth—steam rising through the snow as a quiet reminder that Yellowstone is always moving beneath the surface.

Resting is part of survival.

Grazing through snow—survival continues.

In soft silence, the herd moves across an open winter plain, the land vast and unbroken around them.

Yellowstone in winter—harsh and unforgiving, yet beautiful all the same.
