Welcome to Echoes From the Wild.


My name is Lona and this is where I write the stories that stayed with me—
the ones carried home in my camera and my chest.

They come from the world’s wild places,
told with the heart of a traveler, the eyes of a photographer,
and the soul of someone who simply wants to leave something behind.

Each entry is paired with a small number of photographs I’ve taken from a place I’ve visited,
and written as if speaking to future generations.

These aren’t guides or trip reports—you’ll find those in the section “Travel Journals”.
They’re quiet reflections from places that changed me—
snapshots of moments I didn’t want to forget.
Something I want to leave behind.

This series is a personal legacy project,
built slowly, one quiet moment at a time.

Hi, I’m Lona Downs—a wildlife and travel photographer, named after my grandmother.

For me, photography has never been only about the image. It is about slowing down, noticing, and holding onto moments that might otherwise pass too quickly.

After losing my eldest son, the camera I once reached for so easily stayed behind. During that time, the outdoors remained a steady place for me. Somewhere in its quiet, I began to reconnect—with photography, with beauty, and with myself.

My travels have since taken me from Peru’s Inca Trail and the Himalayas to the summit of Kilimanjaro, the icy wilderness of Antarctica, and many remarkable places in between.

Through my photographs and stories, I share not only the places I have traveled, but what those experiences have left behind in me—moments shaped by light, time, connection, and hope.
